A vivid portrait of the life of Gunda and her piglets that takes us back to the purity of early cinema. A visionary film by Victor Kossakovsky.
Gunda is the protagonist of this black and white documentary. She takes care of her piglets, accompanies them in their discoveries and takes a short break to regain her energy. She approaches the camera curiously. Does she know what her destiny will be? What is she thinking? What does she think of us? Gunda is one of several hundred million pigs inhabiting the planet along with a billion head of cattle and more than 20 billion chickens. Whether they’re playing in the mud, dusting off flies or looking for worms, they’re all heroes.
A sensory experience without filters that takes us to a farm to follow the lives of the animals that live in it. Filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky invites us to slow down and immerse ourselves in an idyllic setting, in powerful black and white, without dialogue or interference. From a new perspective, it compels us to reflect on the mysterious animal consciousness, something that as a society we have decided to ignore in order to avoid dilemmas that are difficult to deal with.
Produced by Joaquin Phoenix and premiered at the Berlinale 2020.
