Augusto Zegarra

Augusto Zegarra is a Peruvian filmmaker based in Lima with a BFA in Film and Media Arts from the University of Utah. His first short film Wiñaymanta won the Ministry of Culture National Prize for Best Short Film. He is also the director of Runa Simi, a documentary feature awarded at the Tribeca Festival 2025 with the Albert Maysles Award for Best New Documentary Director and winner of the Youth Jury Award at Sheffield DocFest. The film has been supported by the Ministry of Culture of Peru, the Sundance Institute, the Swiss Embassy in Peru, and CineLatino of Rencontres Toulouse, as well as participating at the IDFA Forum Rough Cut, GLAFF WIP, DocsBarcelona, ChileConecta, and ARCA Residency in Cabo de Hornos, among others.

Fernando Valencia, a dubbing actor from Cusco (Peru), undertakes an audacious mission: to convince Disney to adapt The Lion King to Quechua in order to preserve his language. Along the way, together with his eight-year-old son, his struggle becomes an intimate journey of paternity, identity and cultural activism, as he faces obstacles, rejections and doubts.

Runa Simi returns to DocsBarcelona after taking part in DocsBarcelona Pro in 2020 and 2023, now ready to be released after his impressive run at international festivals such as Tribeca, Sheffield and Guadalajara. A history of persistence and defence of Quechua culture and language, essential in an increasingly globalized world, which claims the right to enjoy stories in the mother tongue, even when they challenge the established system.
