In this sequel to René (2008) Helena Třeštíková is reunited with René, a young man she filmed for twenty years in a communist-era youth prison. René, now in his fifties, is facing a new phase in his life, trying to avoid re-entering prison at all costs. During the thirteen years in which Helena Třeštíková follows him again, we discover how his life has changed, his fleeting relationships that he is unable to maintain for more than a few weeks, and the evolution of his way of thinking. In this way, René - The Prisoner of Freedom becomes a portrait of an outsider who reveals himself as a bold thinker, self-aware of his condition, and highly critical of a society and a system where he does not fit into.
