Social networks have become the default infrastructure for audiovisual production that observes and interprets the world critically. But making them our home comes at a price: an opaque algorithm determines the form, meaning and success indicators of every audiovisual artefact we produce.
Documenting reality in a vertical manner, sustaining constant production just to exist, measuring everything in terms of virality metrics: is it possible to build a rich audiovisual culture from these swamps? In this talk, we will identify the issues at stake in this situation—the problem of collective action, fragmented reception, the homogenisation of criteria—and open our imaginations to alternatives: the dark forests of the internet, federated and public infrastructures, and community archives and repositories.
