Sonia Garcia López

Researcher and university professor

Researcher and professor in Film Studies. She is a Doctor from the University of Valencia and a professor in the Communication department of the Carlos III University in Madrid, where she is part of the TECMERIN group (Television-Cinema: Memory, Representation and Industry). She lectures at the Creation, Curatorship and Archive postgraduate courses of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola in San Sebastian. She has carried out research residencies at the New York University and the Sorbonne Université and has been invited to give lectures at the University of Cambridge, the Central European University and Vassar College, among other international centers.

Her interests as a researcher include the relationships between cinema and history, documentaries and avant-garde cinema, with an emphasis on the concept of archive, aspects that she has also explored in her curatorial activity for various venues (Cineteca-Madrid, Filmoteca Española, Tabakalera-San Sebastián, Instituto de Iberoamérica, OSA Archivum, etc.). She is the author of the books El cuerpo y la voz de Margarita Alexandre (2016), Spain is US. La Guerra civil española en el cine del Popular Front (1936-1939) (2013) and Ernst Lubitsch. Ser o no ser (2005), as well as co-editor of Piedra, papel y tijera: el collage en el cine documental (2009) and Contraculturas y subculturas en el cine latinoamericano (1975-2015) (2019). Since 2013 she is a member of the editorial board of Kamchatka, a cultural analysis magazine published by the University of Valencia.
