Josep María Civit i Fons, born in Barcelona, studied Graphic Design and Photography at Eina School of Design, and graduated in Theory of Contemporary Arts from the UAB. From 1972 to 1979 he worked as a freelance press photographer, and in 1979 he transitioned to cinema. Since 1986 he has worked as a director of photography in all kinds of productions in film, television, commercials and documentaries. He has worked with renowned directors such as Monte Hellmann, Bigas Luna, Agustín Villaronga, Paul Leduc, Keith English, Brian de Palma, Adrian Noble, Brad Anderson, Andi Baiz, among others. He combines his passion for feature films with his work in commercials and documentaries. He has won two Gaudí Awards from the Catalan Film Academy for best cinematography for the feature films Incerta Glòria (2018) and El Rey de La Habana (2016), both directed by Agustí Villaronga. He was nominated for the Goya Awards for best cinematography in 2016 for El Rey de La Habana and in Camerimage 2004 for Guerreros, directed by Daniel Calparsoro. He recently won the Best cinematography award at the Malaga Film Festival 2021 for his work on The Belly of the Sea.
