Discover the awards for the films that are part of the 2024 program. The awards will be presented at the closing ceremony on Saturday, May 11th at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona.
Awards

With a cash prize of €5000 and a festival statuette. This award is applicable to the films of the Official Section – Panorama that do not compete for the New Talent Award, produced after January 2018, that have not been released commercially in Spain (in commercial cinemas and / or VOD) and that have not been broadcasted on television in Spain.

DocsBarcelona Panorama Jury

This award is applicable to the films of the Official Section – Panorama that are the filmmaker’s first feature-length film and consist of a statuette (also in case of co-directing). This award is given by the DocsBarcelona Panorama Jury. This award is not compatible with the DocsBarcelona Award for the Best Documentary. In the event that the final selection does not have a minimum of 5 films that can qualify for this award in accordance with the above provisions, the festival organization may also establish films that are the second feature film of his/her director (also in case of co-directing) and these will automatically qualify for the New Talent award.

Award-winning movie: Inside the red brick wall by Hong Kong Documentary Filmmakers

Addressed to films selected for the so-called section that includes documentaries from Spain, Portugal and Latin-American countries. This prize is awarded by the DocsBarcelona Latitud Jury and sponsored by Antaviana Films, it consists of 3000€ worth in services of completion work for the director’s next film (finishing, conformation, color correction, sound, DCP copy) and a statuette. This award has an expiring date of 2 years after the Awards ceremony for its execution.

Amnesty International Catalunya

This award is applicable to any of the films (in the Official Sections Panorama and Latitud) with a theme or topic that defends the rights proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the freedom of speech and the values shared by International Amnesty, and it also shows a remarkable use of cinematographic elements in the fight for transforming reality. This award consists of a statuette and is given by the Amnesty International Catalunya Jury.

Award-winning movie: Room without a view by Roser Corella

This award is applicable to all the films of the DOC-U Section. This award is given by the DOC-U Jury and consists of a statuette and a 1000€ worth in renting material, sponsored by 16nou.

Award-winning movie: La ermitaña by Anna Hanslik

All the films of the Official Sections (Panorama and Latitud) will compete for this award. The audience of the films will grant this award. The winning film will be the one who gets the best score in the audience votes. This award, sponsored by Moritz, consist of a cash prize of 1500€ and a statuette. The award is given by the festival’s audience.

The audience of the Docs&Teens Section will grant this award. The winning film will be the one who gets the best score in this section. This award is given by the audience and consists of a statuette.

Films within the Official Sections (Panorama and Latitud) that are part of the Reteena Itinerary, a special selection made up for the Reteena Festival organization, collaborators of the DocsBarcelona Festival, which are eligible for this award. The special selection is based on films within the three official sections that stand out and are considered for young audiences. This Award is given by the Reteena Young Jury and consists of a statuette.

Juries

Docs&Pearls Jury

Currently the director of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). She has been the director and chief curator of The Showroom in London, as well as lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a member of the Thought Council, Fondazione Prada. She has previously been curator of the Göteborg International Biennial of Contemporary Art; curator of international art at Tate Modern, London; artistic director of Rencontres Picha – Lubumbashi Biennial, Democratic Republic of the Congo; curator of contemporary art at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC), Seville; senior curator at Creative Time in New York; and curator of contemporary art at the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

Born in San Sebastián in 1976. Daughter of a Bubi woman from Equatorial Guinea and an Igbo man from Nigeria. Actress (by vocation) graduated from the Higher School of Dramatic Arts from Murcia in 2002. Playwright (for social responsibility) training at the Beckett studio in Barcelona. Self-taught theatre director (out of obligation).
Co-creator and performer of It's No Country for Black Women, a show on tour since 2016. Translated into English and German, the piece is subject of study by national and international researchers at universities such as the American Marquette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Tulane, University of New Orleans. Creator of other shows such as Blackface y otras verguenzas, Parad de pararme and Cuentos desde la periferia. As a performer she premiered La moreneta created within the framework of the exhibition Feminismos! and also Somos diáspora, premiered within the show #Nosomosunhastag, both at the CCCB. In theatre she has worked in several shows: Sindrome de gel directed by Xicu Masó, Grrrls directed by Carlota Subirós, premiered at the Estación Alta festival, Kill Agamenon, directed by Carla Rovira for the season Dones LLiures at the Teatre LLiure and L'amansi(pa)ment de les fúries from the company Parking Shakespeare.
In film and television, she has just played a supporting role in the series Detective Touré that will premiere in 2024. She participated in Cathedral of the Sea, produced by Diagonal TV, in the film Inside by Nostromo Pictures, directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas, the short films Panteras directed by Erika Sanchez Marcos, Daucus Carota directed by Carla Linares, Umbered and O No Será, directed by Sally Fenaux Barleycorn. Afro-feminist activist, she is part of several groups and promotes different initiatives that work on positive visibility of black women. She is the director of Periferia Cimarronas, the first Afro feminist theatre in the Spanish state.

Programmer and PR representative. Petrula Veljanovska was born and lives in Skopje. After graduating from the Faculty of Classical Studies in Skopje, Petrula has been working on and off as a freelance translator in English and Serbo-Croatian at many film festivals. She is a part of MakeDox from its beginning in 2009. Her role in MakeDox is as Programmer of sections like Country in Focus, Short Docs, Kids and Youth Program and also PR representative, looking after the festival images and relation between the festival and its audience. As a passionate docu-lover, she believes that documentaries are important for the personal and social development of every human being, especially for children, who by learning trough images realize how to express themselves aesthetically and ethically, and growing into people ready to engage in society and discuss different topics. Her working motto is: MAKE DOX and think outside the box!

Since 2021, Jinseok Kang has been the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival's (DMZ Docs) programmer. Before that, he lectured on filmmaking and cinema history at multiple universities, including Korea National University of Arts, Dankook University, and served as a producer of several documentaries, including Exile Trilogy series (directed by Soyoung Kim). He holds degrees in film theory and visual anthropology from the Korea National University of Arts (Karts) and the Freie Universität Berlin, respectively.

Producer, director, writer, DOP. Explores intimate spaces between and within people. Graduate in Psychology, MA in Artistic Productions and Research, trained in photography, she is also alumna of prestigious programmes such as IDFAcademy, Circle - Women’s Doc Accelerator, LIM Development Angels, Dok.incubator, and EURODOC, among others. Member of DAE, EWA, Dones Visuals, DOCMA. As a producer and DOP, she has worked on films like You Will Be a Man and In loco parentis. Her first feature as a director is Light Falls Vertical (2022), premiered at IDFA and nominated for multiple awards such as Best First Feature at IDFA.

La Viciosa, 2020) En audiovisual, forma part del repartiment de Marbella (Buendía Estudios Canarias, SLU – Movistar+, 2023), Jo Mai Mai (Abacus Coop. – TV3, 2023) i Fuet (Minoria Absoluta, 2023). Anteriorment va protagonitzar el curtmetrage Moros en la Costa, curtmetratge per Damià Serra Cauchetiez (prod. ESCAC, 2018), pel qual va rebre el premi millor interpretació masculina del Certamen Nacional de Creación Audiovisual de Cabra 2019 ex-aequo amb Nacho Guerreros.

Mariona Borrull (they) is a film critic for Fotogramas and regularly collaborates with Gara, El Cultural and Kinótico. On the radio, she speaks to Va de Cine on Ràdio 4, Tot és Comèdia on SER Catalunya and La Finestra Indiscreta on Catalunya Ràdio. She has focused on the coverage of class A festivals (Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto...), which she combines with university teaching (UPC, UOC) and the programming of the Most i de L'Alternativa festival . She is a member of ACCEC and the Comitè dels Feroz, and will be Berlinale Talents 2022.

The documentary "Paola" (2021) is an original idea by Claudia Solano and she developed it along with Marta Martín, Daniela Rey and Pere Neila during the first year of their degree in Cinematography at the ESCAC Film school. Tutored by Fèlix Colomer, director of documentaries such as Vitals, these young creators have made Paola more than just a university project.

Tutored by Fèlix Colomer, director of documentaries such as Vitals, these young creators have made Paola more than just a university project.

Awarded by Amnesty International Catalonia Jury

She holds a degree in Hispanic Philology from the University of Barcelona (UB) and a Master's degree in Translation and Comparative Literature (UPF). She works as a bookseller and Spanish teacher in the UK, where she has been living since 2019. She has been a member of Amnesty International since 2010 and is an activist in the US-Caribbean Country Task Force. President of Amnesty International Catalonia from May 2002 until April 2024.

Graduate in Political and Administrative Sciences (UPF). For over 10 years she has directed and coordinated the office of Amnesty International Catalonia (AIC) and represents the organisation before institutions, public authorities and the media.
A specialist in human rights, she also has extensive experience as a speaker and trainer.

Political scientist specialising in communication on armed conflicts, peace and social movements. He is currently in charge of activism at Amnesty International Catalonia. He has worked in organisations such as Justice and Peace and the Barcelona Youth Council (CJB). He is an active member of the movement for decent housing and of solidarity networks with various peoples around the world.
